Caitlyn, the Sheriff of Piltover, is League of Legends’ longest-ranged marksman and one of its most punishing lane bullies when ahead. Her ability to poke opponents from a distance most other bot laners can’t match makes her a consistently strong pick when she’s allowed to farm freely.
Role and class
Caitlyn is a marksman played almost exclusively in the bottom lane, built around outranging her opponent and controlling the lane with traps and long-range damage rather than close-quarters trading. She’s a scaling hyper-carry whose damage output grows significantly with items.
Core kit overview
Caitlyn’s passive grants her a bonus-damage headshot every few basic attacks, and that bonus is guaranteed on the very next attack against a target she’s just immobilized - a mechanic that ties her burst damage directly to landing crowd control. Her net-and-jump ability lets her leap backward while damaging anyone she lands on, doubling as both an escape tool and a way to reset distance in a trade. She also has a piltover peacemaker ability that fires a wide, long-range line of damage, her primary poke and wave-clear tool that outranges nearly every other champion’s basic attacks. Her yordle trap ability lets her lay hidden traps around the lane or map that immobilize any enemy who triggers them, setting up her passive’s guaranteed headshot. Her ultimate fires an extremely long-range, telegraphed shot that deals heavy damage and briefly stuns whoever it hits, capable of picking off a target from well outside a normal teamfight’s range.
Strengths and weaknesses
Caitlyn’s biggest strength is her range advantage - she can poke and farm from further away than almost any other bot laner, and her traps combined with her passive give her some of the most reliable burst damage in the role once she lands a root. Her ultimate also lets her threaten kills across a much wider area than most marksmen.
Her main weakness is a lack of mobility and defensive tools outside her net - once engaged on by a diving assassin or fighter, she has very limited ways to survive if her escape is down. She also falls off in extended close-range fights against marksmen with stronger sustained damage output once the range advantage is neutralized.
How she’s typically played
Caitlyn is played almost exclusively as a bottom-lane marksman, using her range to control the wave and poke safely from a distance while laying traps to punish overextensions. As the game progresses, her role shifts to dealing consistent damage from the back of a teamfight while using her ultimate to pick off isolated targets.
Common matchups and synergies
Against shorter-range marksmen, Caitlyn’s poke advantage lets her control the lane heavily and farm without much risk. Against marksmen or supports with strong dashes or engage tools that can close her range advantage quickly, she has a much harder laning phase. She pairs well with supports who can peel dive threats away from her, since her own kit offers little defense once an assassin has closed the distance.
