League of Legends’ meta shifts constantly. Patches rebalance abilities and items, new champions enter the pool, and the collective playerbase keeps discovering strategies the last patch didn’t account for. Tier lists and item builds exist to compress all of that into something usable: a quick read on what’s commonly considered strong right now, and how to actually build a champion to get the most out of a given patch.

How to read a tier list without over-trusting it

A tier list ranks champions, usually within a role, from strongest to weakest based on how much they’re winning and how impactful they are when played well. The useful way to read one is as a snapshot of current conditions, not a permanent hierarchy - a champion commonly considered strong for bullying their lane opponent early can fall off if the enemy team scales past them, and item or rune changes in a single patch can swing a champion up or down several tiers. Treat “top of the tier list” as a strong starting point for what to practice or ban, not a guarantee of winning, and always weigh it against your own comfort on a champion - a champion you know well will usually outperform a “stronger” champion you’re learning for the first time.

What goes into a build

A build is the combination of runes, summoner spells, and item purchase order a champion uses across a game. Good builds are shaped by three things: the champion’s kit (what stats actually make their abilities more effective), the matchup (whether you need defensive items earlier because of a tough lane opponent), and the game state (whether your team needs you to deal damage, peel for carries, or soak up damage as a frontline). Because items and runes get rebalanced regularly, the specific “best build” for a champion is one of the fastest-moving pieces of information in the game - a build that was standard a few patches ago can become suboptimal overnight.

Counter picks and synergies

Beyond raw tier strength, this section also covers picks that work well against specific opponents (counters) and picks that work well alongside specific teammates (synergies). These matter because League is a team game decided by matchup interactions as much as individual champion strength - a champion sitting mid-tier in isolation can become a great pick if it directly answers what the enemy team is doing, or a poor one if it feeds into what a lane opponent wants.

How to use this section

Use tier lists to shortlist what to practice or prioritize banning, then check the build and matchup notes for anything you’re planning to play seriously. Because this is patch-dependent information, always cross-reference with current patch notes or in-game data before treating any specific number as gospel - the framing here focuses on why something works, which tends to stay useful even after the exact numbers move.
