Layla is one of Mobile Legends’ earliest marksmen and still one of the simplest ways to learn the role. Armed with a blaster that outranges most other heroes in the early game, she’s built around a straightforward idea: stay far enough away that the enemy can’t easily reach her, and let superior attack range do the work that positioning tricks or complex combos do for other carries.
Role and playstyle
Layla is played as a standard backline marksman, farming safely in lane before scaling into a consistent damage source in team fights. Her core advantage is attack range — she can often poke and trade damage from further away than the heroes trying to engage her, which rewards patient, disciplined positioning over aggressive plays. Her ultimate is a long-range beam that reinforces this identity, letting her threaten damage across a wider stretch of the map than her basic attacks alone would allow, making her a hero who wins through spacing rather than mechanical flair.
Strengths
Layla’s greatest strength is safety. Her range advantage lets her contribute damage in fights while standing further back than most other marksmen would dare, reducing how often she needs to gamble on close-range trades. She’s also mechanically simple, making her an easy hero for new players to pick up while still being effective, since her value comes from positioning discipline rather than combo execution.
Weaknesses
That safety depends entirely on maintaining distance, and Layla has essentially no mobility tools to create it herself. If she’s caught out of position or dove by an assassin or fighter with gap-closing tools, she has very little way to escape, making her one of the more punishing marksmen to misplay. Experienced opponents also learn to play around her range advantage by forcing fights in tighter spaces or baiting her into overextending, which neutralizes much of what makes her strong.
Build direction
Layla’s itemization follows core marksman logic: attack speed and physical damage early to support safe farming, moving into a mix of damage, attack speed, and critical strike items as the game progresses to maximize her steady-damage output. Because she has so little built-in escape, defensive or mobility-adjacent items are worth prioritizing earlier than on more self-sufficient marksmen, particularly against team compositions with strong dive potential.
