Saber is one of Mobile Legends’ original assassins and still one of the clearest examples of the archetype: a sword fighter whose entire kit is built around picking a single target, locking them down, and eliminating them before their team can react. He doesn’t have the mobility or repositioning tools of newer assassins, but his straightforward lock-and-burst game plan has kept him relevant as an approachable entry point into the assassin role.
Role and playstyle
Saber is played in the jungle, clearing camps in the early game before rotating to look for kill opportunities on isolated or low-health enemy heroes. His defining tool is a dash-and-lock ability that closes the distance to a chosen target and prevents them from escaping for a short window, which he chains directly into his burst damage combo. This lock-on mechanic is what makes him distinct from most assassins — rather than relying purely on mobility or stealth to secure a kill, he removes his target’s ability to disengage entirely, turning the fight into a guaranteed exchange rather than a chase.
Strengths
Saber’s core strength is reliability in securing a target once his combo begins — his lock effectively removes the enemy’s mobility and dash-based escape tools for the duration, meaning a well-timed engage on a squishy hero is very difficult to walk away from. His combo also comes online quickly, letting him threaten kills earlier in the match than many assassins who need more levels or items to reach full burst potential.
Weaknesses
Saber’s kit is almost entirely front-loaded into a single combo, so if that engage is blocked, dodged, or fails to secure a kill, he’s left with comparatively little to fall back on until his cooldowns reset. He also has limited escape tools of his own outside of his engage dash, meaning a failed or interrupted combo can leave him stranded in the middle of the enemy team. Tanky heroes with strong sustain or crowd-control immunity effects can also weather his burst far better than the squishy targets he’s built to punish.
Build direction
Saber’s itemization is built entirely around burst physical damage, since his value comes from ending a fight in one combo rather than trading over time. Early items typically prioritize sustain and mobility-adjacent stats to support jungling and early kill attempts, moving into a core of burst damage and penetration items as the game progresses to maximize how much his lock-on combo threatens squishy targets. Because he has little defensive cushioning by design, timing his engages around when his combo is fully available matters more than any specific defensive itemization choice.
